Lifeguard Professional Programs

Level 1 Lifeguard Instructor

Intent

The SSI Level 1 Lifeguard Instructor program provides candidates with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to teach, supervise, and issue certifications for Water Safety Attendant and Pool Lifeguard programs.

Minimum Instructor Rating

An active status Lifeguard Instructor Trainer may conduct the Level 1 Lifeguard Instructor program.

Candidate Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 18 years old.
Have the following SSI certifications or equivalent from a recognized training agency:
  • Pool Lifeguard

Duration

  • Recommended hours for completion: 40-56
  • The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, based on the candidate’s needs and ability.

In-Water Ratios

  • The candidate-to-instructor ratio is 6:1.
  • The instructor trainer must have sufficient training aids available and the ability to control and supervise all of the candidates at all times.

Minimum Supervision

  • An active status Lifeguard Instructor Trainer must directly supervise the entire program.

Requirements For Completion

  • Complete all Academic and Training Sessions as outlined in the instructor manual for the Lifeguard Instructor Training Course.
  • Complete the Candidate Water Fitness Evaluation as outlined in the SSI Training Standards if it has been more than six months since the candidate has been evaluated.
  • Complete the program’s final exam.

Certification

  • Upon completion of all training requirements, a Lifeguard Instructor Trainer must issue the SSI Level 1 Lifeguard Instructor digital certification card.
  • Candidates with an oxygen provider or AED instructor certification with a recognized training agency may submit an application for a React Right Instructor rating.
Level 1 Lifeguard Instructors may teach, supervise and issue certifications for the levels:
  • Water Safety Attendant
  • Pool Lifeguard
  • Inland Open Water Lifeguard

Active Status Requirements

  • Teach at least one (1) Pool Lifeguard program every 24 months.
  • Participate in a Lifeguard Instructor Update every 24 months.
