Try SCR

Intent

The SSI Try SCR program provides participants with an introductory rebreather experience with a Mares Horizon semi-closed rebreather, supervised by an SCR Diving Instructor in a pool/confined water environment. It also may include an optional open water experience dive.

Note | This is a recognition program. The SSI Professional should focus on the participants’ safety and enjoyment, avoiding over-teaching.

Minimum Instructor Rating

An active status, unit-specific SCR Diving Instructor may conduct the Try SCR program.

Administrative Requirements

Prior to beginning the program, they must complete the:
  • Registration Form
  • Privacy Policy Form
  • SSI Extended Range (XR) Technical Diving - Assumption of Risk, Liability Release & Hold Harmless Agreement
  • SSI Extended Range (XR) Responsible Diver Code
  • Diver Medical Participant Questionnaire

Participant Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 16 years old.
Have logged at least:
  • 12 total dives
Have the following SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:
  • Open Water Diver

Duration

  • Recommended hours for completion: 4–6.

Depth Limitations

  • Maximum depth limit: 12 meters.

In-Water Ratios

Pool/confined water

  • The participant-to-instructor ratio is 2:1.

Open water

  • The participant-to-instructor ratio is 1:1.

Note | Each SSI Professional must comply with local regulations and insurance requirements applicable to introductory scuba programs.

Minimum Equipment Configuration

Participants and instructors must use the following equipment configuration:
  • A complete SCR Total Diving System. The SCR unit must be a Mares Horizon SCR.

Note | An active status SCR Extended Range Instructor may conduct the Try SCR using both the bottom and decompression cylinders.

Proximity

Participants must remain under the direct supervision of the instructor so that physical contact can be made at all times during all in-water sessions.

Requirements For Completion

  • Complete all academic sessions and assessments as outlined in the instructor manual for Try SCR.
  • Participate in an equipment configuration session as outlined in the instructor manual for Try SCR.
  • Complete at least one (1) pool/confined water session. Skill demonstration and evaluations are only required if the participant will participate in the optional open water experience dive.
  • Complete one (1) optional open water experience dive as outlined in the instructor manual for Try SCR.

Sequence

  • Pool/confined water session may only be conducted after the participant successfully completes the academic sessions and the equipment configuration session.
  • The optional open water experience dive may only be conducted after the participant successfully completes the pool/confined water session.

Issuing a Recognition Card

  • Try SCR is a recognition program only.
  • Upon completion, process all participants in MySSI so they may receive their digital recognition card.
  • Participants may complete additional SCR experience dives under the direct supervision of an SSI SCR Diving Instructor, in environments equivalent to their training and within the recommended depth limits, for six (6) months after completion of the Try SCR program.
  • After six (6) months, the participant must retake the Try SCR program or register for an SCR Diving or SCR Extended Range Diver program to continue SCR diving.
