Survival Swim

Intent

The SSI Survival Swim program provides students with the knowledge and training necessary to pass the Water Fitness Evaluation for the SSI Open Water Diver program.

Note | This is a recognition program. The SSI Professional should focus on the students’ safety and enjoyment, avoiding over-teaching.

Minimum Instructor Rating

An active status Survival Swim Teacher may conduct the Survival Swim program.

Student Prerequisites

  • Minimum age | 10 years old.

Duration

Recommended hours for completion | 16–18.

In-Water Ratios

  • Student-to-instructor ratio | 4:1.
  • The ratio may increase to 8:2 with one (1) certified assistant, or 12:3 with two (2) certified assistants.

Minimum Supervision

  • An active status Survival Swim Teacher must directly supervise all academic and in-water sessions.

Requirements For Completion

  • Complete all academic and in-water sessions and assessments as outlined in the instructor manual for Survival Swim.

Issuing a Recognition Card

  • Survival Swim is a recognition program only.
  • Upon completion, process all students in MySSI so they may receive their digital recognition card.

SSI materials are written in English and follow U.S. spelling and punctuation.
