Snorkel Instructor (ISO 13970)

Intent

The SSI Snorkel Instructor program provides candidates with the knowledge and training necessary to conduct entry-level snorkeling programs in a safe and enjoyable manner.
Active status Divemasters are automatically certified as Snorkel Instructors. This program can also be used by an active status SSI Training Center to train non-diving Snorkel Instructors.

Minimum Instructor Rating

An active status Open Water Instructor may conduct the Snorkel Instructor program.

Candidate Prerequisites

  • Minimum age | 18 years old.

Duration

  • Recommended hours for completion | 6-10.

Depth Limitations

  • Maximum pool/confined water depth limit | 5 meters.
  • Maximum open water depth limit | 10 meters.

In-Water Ratios

  • The candidate-to-instructor ratio is at the discretion of the instructor.

Supervision

  • An active status Open Water Instructor must directly supervise all academic, pool/confined water, and open water activities.

Requirements For Completion

  • Complete and pass all requirements and evaluations listed in the instructor manual for Snorkel Instructor.
  • Complete the Candidate Water Fitness Evaluation as outlined in the SSI General Training Standards.

Certification

  • Upon completion of training, upload the candidate’s training record with all required documentation into the MySSI System.
  • The candidate will be certified as an SSI Snorkel Instructor.

Active Status Qualifications

Active status SSI Snorkel Instructors may teach, supervise and issue recognition cards for the following program:
  • Snorkel Diver
Active status SSI Snorkel Instructors may also:
  • Guide snorkelers on excursions in open water environments.
