Mermaid Instructor Trainer

Intent

The SSI Mermaid Instructor Trainer Seminar provides candidates with the knowledge and training necessary to organize and conduct SSI mermaid instructor-level training courses.

Note | Instructor Trainer Seminars are conducted by SSI Service Centers, and candidates are selected through an application process.

Candidate Prerequisites

  • Minimum age | 21 years old.
  • Have no QMS Cases that result in a compliance action in the previous twelve (12) months.
Have the following SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:
  • Mermaid Instructor

Option 1

Provide written proof of having issued 70 Mermaid certifications and assisted with at least one (1) Mermaid Instructor Training Course with an active status Mermaid Instructor Trainer.

Option 2

SSI Instructor Trainers or Freediving Assistant Instructor Trainers may automatically upgrade to Mermaid Instructor Trainer after meeting the following prerequisites.
Have issued at least:
  • 10 total Mermaid certifications.
  • 2 Ocean Mermaid certifications.
The candidate must submit a request to an International Training Director for approval.

Duration

  • Recommended hours for completion | 48–56.

Depth Limitations

  • All in-water training must be conducted at depths between five (5) and 10 meters.

Ratios

  • The candidate-to-instructor ratio is 6:1.
  • The ratio may increase to 12:2 with a Mermaid International Training Director (requires written approval from the SSI International).

Note | A Mermaid Instructor Trainer may assist with the Instructor Trainer Seminar as part of their own training without affecting ratios.

Minimum Supervision

  • An active status International Training Director must directly supervise all academic, pool/confined water and open water activities.

Requirements For Completion

  • Complete and pass all requirements and evaluations listed in the Instructor Trainer Seminar Manual.

Certification

  • Upon completion of the Instructor Trainer Seminar, send all required documentation to the responsible SSI Service Center.
  • The candidate will be certified as an SSI Mermaid Instructor Trainer.

Active Status Requirements

  • Exemplify the SSI philosophy and display competence in applying the SSI Business System.
  • Conduct at least one (1) complete Mermaid Instructor Training Course every 24 months. If this 24-month period is exceeded, the Instructor Trainer may attend a remedial training session or maintain inactive status until remedial training is complete.
  • Attend all applicable mandatory updates scheduled by SSI International.
  • Instructor Trainers will be held responsible for the quality of education.

Active Status Qualifications

Active status Mermaid Instructor Trainers may teach, supervise and issue certifications for the following programs:
  • Mermaid Instructor Training Course
  • Snorkel Instructor
  • Mermaid Crossover for candidates from other recognized training agencies.

SSI materials are written in English and follow U.S. spelling and punctuation.
