Assistant Instructor Trainer

Intent

The SSI Assistant Instructor Trainer Seminar provides candidates with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to certify Assistant Instructors, and to assist in teaching the Instructor Training Course.

Minimum Instructor Rating

An active status Instructor Trainer may conduct the Dive Control Specialist Instructor/Assistant Instructor Trainer program.

Candidate Prerequisites

  • Minimum age | 18 years old.
Have the following SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:
  • Divemaster Instructor
Have issued at least 42 certifications including:
  • 30 Scuba Diver and/or Open Water Diver
  • 3 Diver Stress & Rescue
  • 3 Dive Guide/Divemaster
  • 6 Advanced Adventurer and/or additional specialty programs
The candidate may also apply completed Try Scuba and Basic Diver programs toward the minimum requirements for Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver certifications.
Scuba Diver Certifications:
  • Six (6) Try Scuba recognitions are equivalent to one (1) Scuba Diver certification.
  • Three (3) Basic Diver certifications are equivalent to one (1) Scuba Diver certification.
Open Water Diver Certifications:
  • Twelve (12) Try Scuba recognitions are equivalent to one (1) Open Water Diver certification.
  • Six (6) Basic Diver certifications are equivalent to one (1) Open Water Diver certification.

Duration

  • Recommended hours for completion | 30–45.
  • The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual instructor, based on the candidate’s needs, ability and local water conditions.

Minimum Supervision

  • An active status Instructor Trainer or higher must directly supervise all academic, pool/confined water and open water training dives.

Requirements For Completion

  • Complete all academics sessions as outlined in the instructor manual for the Assistant Instructor Trainer Seminar.
  • Complete the program’s final exam.
  • Complete the Candidate Water Fitness Evaluation as outlined in the SSI General Training Standards.
  • Complete and pass all requirements and evaluations listed in the instructor manual for the Assistant Instructor Trainer Seminar.

Certification

  • Upon completion of training, upload the candidate’s training record with all required documentation into the MySSI System.
  • The candidate will be certified as an Assistant Instructor Trainer.

Active Status Requirements

  • Attend all applicable mandatory updates scheduled by SSI International.

Active Status Qualifications

In addition to the programs taught by active status Specialty Instructors, active status Dive Control Specialist Instructor/Assistant Instructor Trainers may teach, supervise and issue certifications for the following programs:
  • Assistant Instructor
  • Specialty Instructor Seminar (if they have the applicable Specialty Instructor certification)
  • Dive Professional Crossover (up to the Assistant Instructor level)
Active status Dive Control Specialist Instructor/Assistant Instructor Trainers may also:
  • Assist an Instructor Trainer in conducting all SSI Instructor-level programs.
