Mermaid Professional Programs

Mermaid Instructor

Intent

The SSI Mermaid Instructor program provides candidates with the knowledge and training necessary to conduct SSI Mermaid programs in a safe and enjoyable manner.
There are two certification methods for the Mermaid Instructor program:
  • Mermaid Instructor Training Course
  • Co-Teaching

Note | The co-teaching option may not be available, depending on local or regional requirements. Please see the Regional Addendums section of these standards, or contact your SSI Service Center to determine whether the option is available.

Minimum Instructor Rating

An active status Mermaid Instructor Trainer may conduct the Mermaid Instructor Training Course.

For co-teaching option:

An active status Mermaid Instructor may conduct the co-teaching certification option.

Candidate Prerequisites

  • Minimum age | 18 years old.
Have the following SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:
  • Mermaid
  • Snorkel Instructor

For co-teaching option:

Have the following active status SSI certifications (no equivalency permitted):
  • Snorkel Instructor

Duration

  • Recommended hours for completion: Mermaid ITC | 24-32, co-teaching 8-12.

Note | If an introduction into Monofin swimming is required, the duration must be extended.

Depth Limitations

  • Maximum pool/confined water depth limit | 5 meters.

In-Water Ratios

  • The candidate-to-instructor ratio is at the discretion of the instructor.

Requirements For Completion

  • Successfully complete all academic and practical application sessions as outlined in the instructor manual for the Mermaid Instructor Training Course.
  • Complete the program’s final exam.
  • Complete the SSI Mermaid Water Fitness Evaluation as outlined in the SSI General Training Standards.

For co-teaching option:

  • Successfully co-teach at least one complete Ocean Mermaid program.
  • Have the Training Center QMS Manager of the affiliated SSI Training Center sign off the Training Completion Record.

Certification

  • Send the candidate’s training record with all required documentation to the responsible SSI Service Center.
  • The candidate will be certified as an SSI Mermaid Instructor.

Active Status Qualifications

Active status Mermaid Instructors may teach, supervise and issue certifications for the following programs:
  • Try Mermaid
  • Mermaid
  • Ocean Mermaid
  • Mermaid Model Specialty
  • Snorkel Diver

SSI materials are written in English and follow U.S. spelling and punctuation.
